Mission and Overview
Founded in 1989, the mission of the Iowa Architectural Foundation is to promote awareness and appreciation of architecture and design. The Foundation strives to achieve this mission through youth education, public awareness programs, and community design charrettes. We invite Iowa’s citizens, elected officials, and business leaders to invest in a vision that recognizes the important role of architecture and design in society.
Our Programs
Architecture in the Community works to raise awareness of architecture by conducting walking tours of downtown Des Moines. Since 2002, over 600 residents and visitors have learned to appreciate the historic and contemporary architectural fabric of Iowa’s capital city. The Architecture Month Lecture Series is held every April in celebration of Iowa Architecture Month and examines an architecture or design-related topic. Future programs to engage the public with the built environment are under development.

Architecture in the Schools has been educating younger Iowans about architecture and the built environment since 1985. Current programs include the Architecture by Children Drawing Contest and ArKIDtec-Sure! Past programs have included professional development workshops for educators, career seminars for high school students, and book drives for libraries.

Community Design Program has assisted mostly rural communities with a population under 5,000 with design issues involving downtown revitalization, streetscapes, and gateway entrances. This program brings together civic groups, elected officials, and concerned citizens with design professionals to devise solutions.
Publicly Supported
The majority of IAF programming is provided at no charge to the public thanks to the continued, generous support of donations and grants from individuals, architectural firms, industries allied to architecture, small businesses, corporations, and foundations.

The Iowa Architectural Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Charitable contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
